The University of Pavia is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions, with its foundations existing as early as the 9th Century and until the 20th century it was the only university in the Milan Area and the region of Lombardy. The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is an institution located inland in the North of Portugal in a region of low population density. It is made up of 5 Schools that offer different training and postgraduate courses. The University of Duhok was founded on 31st of October 1992, following a resolution by the Kurdistan Parliament to address the increasing demand for higher education in the region. Initially, the university was established with two colleges; the College of Medicine and the College of Agriculture. The Medical College started with 48 students, while the College of Agriculture with 166. During the first two years, the two embargoes imposed by the UN on Iraq and by the Iraqi Central Government on Kurdistan contributed to the slow paced growth of the University and the poor economic conditions in Kurdistan. After these hardships had passed, the university found itself in a position to steer towards progress and improvement. Today the UoD has 18 colleges with 78 Departments, 21265 undergraduate students, 1607 academic staff and 2353 administration staff.
